Downtown Los Angeles has go more hipster and popular over the years as information technology has gentrified and welcomed more than fine art museums and trendy restaurants in the area. Present there is and then much to practise in the area that information technology could keep yous occupied for the meliorate role of the 24-hour interval if non the unabridged weekend. This bang-up list of things to do will entertain y'all with sights and places to eat in downtown Los Angeles!

As this guide was inspired by my insanely long wait (~5+hrs) to get into Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away, many of the sights I suggested are geared towards the arts. But this is also an amazing itinerary for spending 1 day in downtown Los Angeles.

Other noteworthy sights further from the master downtown area include LA Live (Staples Heart and the Grammy Museum are located here), Chinatown, and Dodgers Stadium.

Of import Note: DTLA has not fully gentrified, at that place are still pockets (i.eastward. Sideslip Row) that you would want to stay away from, but for the most part it'southward relatively safety. Be careful which direction you walk in, peculiarly if yous head down to Trivial Tokyo and The Last Bookstore every bit y'all could hands end up in Skid Row.

Below are my suggestions, as an fine art fanatic and foodie, on what to do in downtown Los Angeles while you're waiting to go into Yayoi Kusama'due south Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Low-cal Years Abroad . Y'all can too bask these recommendations while you lot're just hanging effectually in downtown, and all-time of all, all of these places can be seen in 1 mean solar day! 😉

The Broad

Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away is one of the most famous and highly-sought exhibits in Los Angeles and at The Broad. This exhibit is part of the reason for the insanely long lines outside of this museum, but this museum is also Free then that doesn't help either!

The Broad features modern art and is on the smaller side, and then it definitely won't continue you lot occupied for the time it takes to get into the Infinity Room (especially if information technology takes you 5hrs, like my wait). Information technology'll probably take y'all 1-2hrs (max) to get through this museum, but they accept a lot of cool exhibits that are likewise very Instagrammable!

Aside from being a really cool gratuitous exhibit, it's likewise very Instagrammable 😉 But it also happens to be insanely difficult to score tickets online and so many people end upwards "waiting in line" to go far. Aye, "waiting in line," in quotations.

Let me explicate… so if you want to run into the Infinity Mirrored Room, once you make it the door of The Broad get yourself Direct to the iPad at the line for the showroom. Sign up on it to score your spot "in" line. Yous'll need to enter your name and your phone number. Don't worry! They'll text y'all when it's about your turn so experience free to explore The Broad or even leave the museum. Simply make sure yous'll exist able to get back when they text you! 🙂

I've done exactly as I stated above and I once waited over 5hrs in order to get into the exhibit since I was unable to book the tickets online (granted it was July 4th weekend, and then it was BUSY).

Bated from the Infinity Room, some of my favorite exhibits include the following: Andy Warhol's Campbell Soup cans, various works by Roy Lichtenstein, diverse works by Keith Haring, Jeff Koon's "Tulips" (higher up left) and bluish "Balloon Dog" (above correct), and Robert Therrien'south "Under the Table."

Fun Fact: "Broad" in The Broad is pronounced "bro-d" even though it looks like "br-uhd" as in another descriptor for "broad." It's the last name for the philanthropists who founded the museum.

Overall, the museum includes lots of exhibits at a adept price (Gratuitous), and then information technology's definitely worth spending time to come across more of, especially since you have to wait for the master consequence anyways!

Of import Note: If the museum is having a special showroom, those will cost coin (for a timed ticket), and you're not guaranteed fourth dimension in the Infinity Room. You volition however have to sign up for that via the iPad when you get there.

Walt Disney Concert Hall

This was my favorite identify in all of downtown LA… that might just exist because I'm a huge Frank Gehry fan and I'm a sucker for beautiful compages. I love how the building looks so organic and flowy! Its design is very typical of Gehry buildings, then if y'all're a Gehry fan like I am, you lot'll definitely love this!

One of the best things about this concert hall is that you don't have to nourish a music event to encounter it, they provide guided tours as well every bit self-guided audio tours. Both tours are gratis which is pretty amazing in this day and age!

Guided tours, which are approximately 60mins long, are only offered on specified dates and times, see schedule. Cocky-guided audio tours, on the other manus, are offered most days between 10AM and 2PM. See schedule for more infomation . The self-guided sound tours are too approximately 60mins long and begin at the cheque-in area, the K Foyer of the concert hall. The all-time thing about these audio tours is they don't crave a reservation and you tin drib by anytime to do it, equally long as they're offering it at that fourth dimension.

Important Notation: Considering the audio tours are free, they volition accept your ID (or passport) hostage while you're doing the tour since it is possible to wander off the premises with it.

On our mode to the garden area.

We did the audio tour which takes y'all around much of the interior too equally outside via the patio garden area. The interior infinite is beautiful and designed to promote a sense of organic flow throughout the building while enhancing acoustics. The actual garden expanse of the patio is fairly small with several copse and sculptures; there is also a minor performance area. The best thing well-nigh this patio area is that you'll get to do your photography muscles and accept absurd, artsy photos of the edifice.

Note: Some days y'all may not exist able to enter the auditorium if groups are practicing, they'll have a sign on the door stating whether you lot're allowed to go inside.

The Last Bookstore

This bookstore is surprisingly large and super quirky; information technology's got a lot of interesting sculptures built from books. They sell new and used books every bit well equally records then it's a great place to search for those difficult-to-find books. It'southward definitely worth a visit if you're in the area, even if y'all're not super into books, asit's an interesting sight to see.

They take a doorway built with old books equally well equally sculptures of flying books, like to the flying toasters in those old Windows screensavers. In that location are likewise featured local artists' work displayed within the edifice.

Designed past Sumner Hunt and George Wyman in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, the building has a European style expect with wrought fe grillwork and an sunlit primal atrium. The Bradbury Building looks equally beautiful in person every bit it does in the movies, it'southward one of the most beautiful interiors I've ever been in.

Note: Visitors are simply able to become as high every bit the first stair landing since there are occupied offices through the edifice.

An showroom in the MoCA – 1000 location.

Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) – Grand Location

To be honest, this museum is not one of my elevation museums to visit while in LA. I adopt the other location on Geffen, which is a petty further from The Wide and closer to Piffling Tokyo. Neither of the locations are huge, notwithstanding with the purchase of your $15 general admission ticket, you gain entrance to both locations.

Part of my preference for the Geffen location is due to the temporary exhibit I saw at the Geffen, which I enjoyed much more than the exhibits I saw at the G location. The exhibits at the Grand location are primarily permanent exhibits while the Geffen unremarkably houses temporary exhibits; as a outcome, your experience may differ.

Things to Swallow in Downtown Los Angeles

grandcentralmarket_saritaspupuseria
Pupusas and plantains from Sarita'due south Pupuseria.

Thou Fundamental Market

This is a great identify to get food when yous get hungry during your 5+hr wait for the Infinity Room. Information technology's similar to the Public Market in Seattle so in that location are a ton of options and you lot'll find any type of food to fit every palate.

My top recommendation is Sarita's Pupuseria. Pupusas are a blazon of Salvadorean food, made with a thick corn flour tortilla and stuffed with savory fillings, such every bit beefiness, beans, and cheese. If you lot've had Venezuelan arepas earlier, these are similar. Their pupusas are Bomb. I also similar getting their plantains because I CANNOT say no to plantains!

Eggslut is too famous for their breakfast/brunch options, but later on the long look, I wasn't besides impressed. But you can attempt for yourself 🙂

Bottega Louie

Bottega Louie, or "Bottega" as I similar to phone call information technology, is my go-to identify for nutrient with an Italian/French flair. Their pizzas and pastas, while delicious are pretty proficient, merely the waits can be long. One interesting thing to notation… After yous bank check-in with them, the hosts/hostesses will take annotation of what you're wearing so they never have to ask you what your name is and they'll even so be able to find y'all when your table is ready! Definitely quality service!

Though their nutrient is good, but non particularly remarkable (IMO), their chocolate lava cake is TO DIE FOR! One of the all-time chocolate lava cakes I've ever had brusk of having to make information technology myself. Sometimes I also grab some of their macarons for the road, they are not equally bully as the ones from Paris, only it'll do when I'm in LA.

Lilliputian Tokyo

Little Tokyo is a chip of a walk from The Broad, and it's get more than of a mini Koreatown than a Japantown these days, but there'southward yet some expert food to be had!

littletokyo_mikawaya

Mikawaya has amazing ice cream mochi with Asian flavors that are definitely worth a gustatory modality. They're likewise the same company that stocks your local Trader Joe's with water ice cream mochi flavors like green tea, chocolate, vanilla, and mango. Except when you visit their location at Little Tokyo, y'all have access to Style more flavors!

Daikokuya is famous for ramen in LA however the waits are insanely long and I honestly prefer Orenchi Ramen back home in the Bay Area. Nevertheless, it's always worth it to attempt a new identify especially if the waits aren't horrible. I disliked it mainly due to the canned bamboo shoots in their ramen so you might want to skip that.

Location of Japantown: According to Wikipedia , "Little Tokyo can be found in roughly five large metropolis blocks.
